Joseph Stalin (1878–1953), the son of a poor Georgian shoemaker, attended a seminary before leaving to take up revolutionary politics. He played an important part in the Bolshevik coup which seized power in Russia in 1917 and defeated his rivals after the death of Lenin in 1924 to become the Soviet leader. His policies of rapid industrialisation and forced collectivisation transformed the Soviet Union in the 1930s, but his ruthless determination to remove all potential threats to his leadership culminated in a series of bloody purges. Stalin led his country to victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War and secured her position as a global superpower, but his many crimes were denounced by his successors after his death. The Ten Short Chapters series presents clear and concise accounts of great figures and events in history. Written in a straightforward, no-nonsense style they give brief but informative introductions to historical subjects and are ideal for both students and general readers.
